Rain Lake no.7 painting en plein air

Rain Lake en plein air, acrylic on canvas, 12×12

Was a gorgeous day today, so went into The Park with my hubby and kids. Have wanted to paint en plein air at Algonquin for ages, so nice to have a go! Was a bit breezy on Rain Lake which made paddling in and holding still to paint quite challenging! While there I painted a few watercolours from the canoe in the middle of the lake, and a small 12×12 inch acrylic on canvas.

I painted on the shore with my daughter, Ruby, busily drawing birds beside me. The area was just big enough for her to sit, and me to stand and paint holding the canvas. I chose this spot as I liked the lichen on the trees, the warm dry pine needles, and black water along the edges.

This is where we sat, canoe tucked in this little inlet
Where I was painting
Work in progress… sketching with the paint
The technique I use is painting on a bright colour, but applying natural colours on top. Little flecks of the bright colour will show through.
Happy with the form of the rocks and texture of the pine needle and mossy ground.
Moving onto the water and adding in the trees on the other side of the lake.
Started working on the shapes of the branches
Added in foliage and whitish lichen on the dead branches.
Ready to head home with a nice memory of The Park
